How did you transition from being a student at Rosebank College to a software engineering role at Discovery? What was the most important thing you did during your final year?
Great question, Keith! The most important thing I did was build real projects outside of coursework. I contributed to an open-source project and built a small app that solved a real problem for local spaza shops. During interviews, employers cared far more about what I had built than my grades. Start building now, share it on GitHub, and don't be afraid to apply even if you feel you're not ready. You learn the most in your first role.
I'm interested in project management but I'm studying business management, not IT. Is it possible to move into tech project management without a technical degree?
Absolutely, Thandi! I started in business management too. The key is learning the basics of Agile and Scrum, you can get a free Scrum Fundamentals certification online. Combine that with your business skills and you'll be a strong candidate. Many tech companies specifically want PMs who understand the business side, not just the code. Your background is an asset, not a limitation.
